For the assembly
  • 1 1/2 cups strong coffee, cooled Brew your favorite coffee for the best taste.
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur Optional for added depth and flavor.
  • 24 pieces savoiardi biscuits These ladyfingers soak up the coffee beautifully.
  • cocoa powder For dusting.
  • dark chocolate shavings Optional for a decadent touch.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a saucepan, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until pale.
  2. Add the milk and cook over medium heat until thickened, stirring constantly.
  3. Once thickened, remove from heat and let cool.
  4. Once completely cooled, fold in the mascarpone cheese until smooth.
Assembly
  1. In a shallow dish, combine the coffee and liqueur.
  2. Dip each savoiardi biscuit briefly in the coffee mixture.
  3. Arrange a layer of dipped biscuits in a serving dish.
  4. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the biscuits.
  5. Repeat layering with the remaining savoiardi and mascarpone.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  7. Before serving, dust with cocoa powder and top with chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

For serving, consider presenting it family-style in a large dish. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Serve it cold for best flavor and texture.
