Preparation
- In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
- In a small bowl, mix warm water with yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough gently and divide into small balls about the size of a golf ball.
Filling and Frying
- Flatten each ball into a disc and place about a tablespoon of Nutella in the center.
- Fold the dough over the filling and seal it by pressing the edges together.
- Heat the oil in a pot over medium heat. Carefully add the panzerotti to the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Notes
These treats are best served warm. Consider dipping them in melted chocolate or serving with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
